Cissy Noble and Kate - c 1930 by Winifred Nicholson

Winifred Nicholson painted a number of portraits of her helpers with her children, most notably Janet Heap who accompanied Winifred and her family to Cornwall in 1928 and 1932. See Janet and Jacob (UCL Art Museum) for another portrait of Janet Heap. Additionally, Cissy Noble came to Paris in the spring of 1930 with the Nicholsons at the time of Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood’s exhibition at the Bernheim Gallery: see Kate and Cissy in Paris Unknown Colour, Paintings, Letters, Writings by Winifred Nicholson, ed. Andrew Nicholson, Faber and Faber, London, 1987 p. 104 - for another portrait of the pair. Probably the current work was painted at the same time (note the similarity in the curtains in both pictures).

We are grateful to Jovan Nicholson for his assistance in the research of this painting
